Ahtna Marine & Construction Company (AMCC) proudly announces the successful completion of the Mason’s Inlet dredging and beach renourishment project, serving New Hanover County in North Carolina.
Objective and Scope:
Tasked by New Hanover County, AMCC undertook the vital maintenance dredging of Mason’s Inlet, strategically located between Shell Island and Figure Eight Island near Wilmington, NC. In addition to dredging, the project included beach renourishment services utilizing dredged material.
Protecting Coastal Properties:
The initiative aimed to safeguard properties along the southern portion of Figure Eight Island, which have faced significant erosion over the years, particularly exacerbated by recent storms.
Importance of the Project:
This project holds immense significance in maintaining water exchange and a navigable inlet between the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. It also plays a crucial role in fortifying beachfront homes against erosion caused by ocean waves and tides, especially during storm events.
Strategic Timing:
AMCC strategically initiated the project in January, post the holiday season, to minimize disruptions to beach areas during the peak holiday break period.
Efficient Execution:
Leveraging two Cutter Suction Dredges operating round the clock, AMCC successfully extracted all bid quantities and filled the Figure Eight Island design template. This involved relocating over 500,000 cubic yards of material from the inlet onto the beach.
Comprehensive Scope:
The project encompassed not only dredging and beach renourishment but also beach grading and diligent monitoring for environmental concerns.
