Automation and Equipment Package Confirmed for New Hopper Dredger

Introduction

The dredging industry in Turkey is set to take a significant step forward with the confirmation of an advanced automation and equipment package for a new Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD). This vessel, the first of its kind to be designed and built domestically, will bring new capabilities to port maintenance and capital dredging operations.

A Closer Look at the Hopper Dredger’s Capabilities

The new TSHD comes with impressive specifications, including a length of 79.85 meters and the ability to dredge at depths of up to 20 meters. The vessel will be powered by two 1300 kW engines, offering both strength and endurance for demanding marine environments.

Designed to be a multipurpose workhorse, the dredger will support both routine maintenance of ports and waterways as well as large-scale capital dredging projects, such as land reclamation efforts.

Advanced Automation and Dredging Components

Central to the vessel’s capabilities is a comprehensive dredging equipment and automation package. The onboard system will include key components such as:

  • Dredge pump
  • Bow coupling
  • Gate valves
  • Dredge automation suite

These tools will ensure that the TSHD performs efficiently and reliably, even in complex or large-scale projects. The integration of automation also enables better control, monitoring, and optimization of dredging operations, reducing manual intervention and increasing precision.

Enhancing Port Maintenance and Reclamation Projects

The Ministry of Transport will deploy the vessel primarily for maintaining navigable waterways and ports — essential tasks to ensure smooth maritime logistics and trade. Additionally, with the capability to take on capital dredging projects, the vessel can support coastal development initiatives, including land reclamation and shoreline expansion.

This dual role significantly enhances the vessel’s value to national infrastructure strategies and marine engineering objectives.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Dredging

The launch of this TSHD is a strong signal of growing domestic capabilities in shipbuilding and marine innovation. As the demand for efficient, sustainable, and technologically advanced dredging solutions increases, vessels like this will play a key role in maintaining global maritime infrastructure.

By combining power, precision, and smart systems, the new hopper dredger marks a bold step toward a more efficient and future-ready dredging industry.
