Boskalis’ TSHD Gateway and Backhoe Baldur Excel in Dampier Pipeline Project

Boskalis has achieved a major milestone in Western Australia, successfully completing the installation of a 433-kilometer-long gas export pipeline connecting the Scarborough gas field to the Pluto LNG facilities in Dampier. This ambitious project, completed over two years, highlights Boskalis’ expertise in marine construction and pipeline installation.

Key Equipment Used in the Dampier Pipeline Project

Boskalis deployed a specialized fleet of advanced vessels to complete this challenging project. These included:

1. Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) Gateway

The TSHD Gateway played a crucial role in dredging operations, ensuring precise material excavation and relocation.

2. Backhoe Dredger Baldur

The powerful backhoe dredger Baldur contributed to accurate seabed preparation, enabling smooth pipeline installation.

3. Subsea Rock Installation Vessel Seapiper

The Seapiper ensured the placement of protective rock layers along the pipeline route.

4. Construction Support Vessel BOKA Tiamat

This vessel provided essential support, aiding in the coordination and execution of construction activities.

Final Phase: Rock Berm Installation by Seahorse

In the project’s final phase, Boskalis deployed its subsea rock installation vessel, Seahorse. The vessel strategically installed rock mounts—known as berms—at six critical subsea crossings.

Why Rock Berms Are Essential

  • Pipeline Stability: Berms secure the pipeline’s position along the seabed.
  • Protection Against Scouring: They safeguard against material erosion caused by ocean currents.
  • Long-Term Durability: These mounts shield the pipeline from harsh marine conditions, ensuring decades of reliable operation.

“These berms are essential for maintaining the pipeline’s position and protecting it against environmental challenges for decades to come,” Boskalis representatives stated.

A Landmark Project for Marine Construction

This large-scale operation demonstrates Boskalis’ ability to execute complex marine infrastructure projects while maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency. The collaboration of specialized vessels, innovative techniques, and meticulous planning ensures this project will serve as a benchmark in the industry.
