Brighton Marina Launches 2024 Dredging Campaign: Ensuring Safety and Accessibility

Brighton Marina 2024 Dredging Campaign Set to Begin

Brighton Marina is pleased to announce the start of its 2024 dredging operations, which are scheduled to commence the week of May 6th. This annual maintenance activity is essential for ensuring the marina remains safe and accessible for all users.

Collaboration and Compliance

The dredging will be carried out in partnership with our in-house dredger “Doris” and the external contractor, ML Dredging. The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has granted Brighton Marina the authorization to dredge up to 77,000 cubic meters, or 100,000 tonnes, of silt annually, underscoring our commitment to environmental compliance and operational excellence.

Phased Dredging Operations

The 2024 campaign will initially focus on the harbor entrance and visitor bays, with subsequent dredging planned for parts of the central and southern fairways. The operation will extend up to the lock and include the areas between pontoons 24 and 25. This strategic approach ensures minimal disruption and maximum efficiency.

Safety and Communication

ML Dredging is expected to arrive at Brighton Marina in the week of May 6th to begin dredging operations. All mariners should consult Brighton Marina’s notice to mariners number 7 of 2024 for detailed information. It’s crucial for vessel operators to monitor VHF channels 80 and 37 for updates on vessel movements and any operational announcements within the harbor. Regular updates will also be communicated through these channels and additional notices to mariners.

Marina Entrance and Navigation Warnings

Starting on or shortly after May 6th, 2024, dredging activities will include the use of the spud leg backhoe dredger Witton, alongside the hopper barges Split 2 and Split 3. These operations may restrict vessel maneuverability in the marina entrance channel and occasionally within the marina basin itself. All vessels must adhere to the daytime signals as stipulated by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (COLREGS), the Marine Safety Act, and Marine Safety Regulations.

Vessel Traffic Management

Vessel traffic in and around the marina and entrance channel will be carefully managed and may be periodically suspended to ensure safety during dredging operations. All vessel operators are urged to proceed with caution and comply with all VHF announcements regarding navigation in the area.

Brighton Marina is committed to maintaining a safe and efficient environment for all mariners and visitors. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we undertake these important maintenance activities.
