The Government of Canada is set to invest $101 million over the next three years to overhaul, repair, and dredge 26 small craft harbors across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Major Investment for Harbor Infrastructure
Of this total, over $53 million will be dedicated to rebuilding and repairing piers, breakwaters, and other essential infrastructure at 10 harbors severely affected by Hurricane Fiona.
Focus on Lark Harbor
Among the beneficiaries is Lark Harbor, which will receive a new wharf and building, along with dredging improvements. “Lark Harbor is the heart of its fishing community, and this investment will ensure that local fishers have a secure, dependable place to land their catch for many years to come,” stated Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
Importance of Small Craft Harbors
Supporting the Fishing Industry
Small craft harbors are vital to the commercial fishing industry, which saw landings valued at nearly $4.7 billion in 2022. These harbors support over 45,000 jobs in the Canadian commercial fishing sector, plus many additional roles in supporting industries.
Managed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) oversees the maintenance of 949 harbors essential to the commercial fishing industry. Harbor restoration efforts are carried out in collaboration with local harbor authorities, which are incorporated, non-profit organizations managing and operating facilities for local users. Canada has over 5,000 volunteers involved in harbor authorities.
