The $1.2 billion Port of Ndayane project in Senegal has reached a major milestone with the start of dredging operations, aimed at establishing a 5-kilometer shipping channel. This ambitious development is set to enhance Senegal’s trade capabilities and position the country as a key logistics hub in Africa.
State-of-the-Art Dredging for Enhanced Capacity
The cutter dredger Willem Van Rubroeck, operated by Jan de Nul, has begun dredging operations to create a shipping channel capable of accommodating the world’s largest container vessels. This marks the first phase of the Port of Ndayane development.
Phase One: Increased Capacity and Infrastructure
Phase one involves the construction of an 840-meter quay and two berths, which will collectively handle 1.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) per year. The next phase will add another berth and a 410-meter quay wall, doubling the port’s capacity to 2.6 million TEU annually.
A Solution to Alleviate Congestion at DP World Dakar
The Port of Ndayane aims to ease pressure on DP World Dakar, currently Senegal’s sole container terminal, by offering expanded capacity and greater development potential. Positioned 50 kilometers south of Dakar, the new port provides a strategic location with ample space for future expansion—an advantage over the urban-constrained Port of Dakar.
Investment and Support from Global Partners
British International Investment (BII) Collaboration
The UK-based development finance agency, British International Investment (BII), has partnered with DP World to bring this transformative project to life. The Port of Ndayane represents DP World’s largest investment in Africa and the single largest private investment in Senegal’s history.
Building on DP World’s Success in Senegal
Since its involvement at DP World Dakar began in 2008, DP World has increased the port’s handling capacity from 300,000 TEU to 800,000 TEU as of 2023. Construction of the Port of Ndayane began in January 2022, signaling the next phase in Senegal’s logistics development.
Senegal’s Vision for Economic Growth
Government and DP World Partnership
Following a recent meeting with Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, DP World Group Chairman and CEO, highlighted the significance of the Port of Ndayane. He stated, “We firmly believe in Senegal’s economic potential and fully support the government’s vision for growth. The Port of Ndayane will not only elevate Senegal’s trade capabilities but also have a significant impact on trade across the African continent.”
Beyond the Port: Economic Zone Development
DP World’s plans extend beyond the construction of the port. The company is set to develop an economic zone near the port and Blaise Diagne International Airport. This initiative is expected to create more job opportunities than the port itself, further boosting Senegal’s economy.
Conclusion: Positioning Senegal as a Regional Trade Hub
The Port of Ndayane is poised to transform Senegal’s trade and logistics landscape, strengthening its position as a key hub for West Africa. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, strategic location, and significant private investment, this project underscores Senegal’s growing economic potential and DP World’s commitment to driving trade across the African continent.
