Dredgers vs. Fish Farmers: Legal Battle Looms

The Dredging Association of Nigeria (DAN) reported itself willing to sue those fish farmers who blamed the high fish mortality rate in Epe on sand dredging. Such nodding of the head occurs in between the ongoing Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) investigation.

Accusations Lack Scientific Evidence, Says Dredgers Association

DAN’s General Secretary, Mr. Richard Ntan, addressed the media to refute the accusations against their member, Renecon Limited. He highlighted the lack of scientific evidence linking dredging activities to the increased fish deaths and pointed to environmental factors such as extreme weather conditions and water hyacinth as potential causes of the fish mortality in the Lagos State area.

Peace Meeting Urges Business Continuity Amidst Investigation

Following a report by MIREMCO hosted a peace meeting that brought together stakeholders from both sides to calm tensions and ensure business continuity. The meeting in Alausa, Ikeja, included representatives from the dredging community, fish farmers, and environmental agencies. It aimed to address the allegations and foster cooperation until the investigation concludes.

Ntan expressed concerns over the negative media portrayals of Renecon Limited, which have persisted despite the absence of evidence. He warned of potential legal action against those who continue to spread what he described as false narratives, which not only defame Renecon Limited but also threaten public peace and the safety of its employees.

Commitment to Regulatory Compliance and Investigation Cooperation

Reiterating the commitment of Renecon Limited to abide by regulatory guidelines, Ntan called for patience and understanding until the conclusion of the investigation. He stressed that Renecon is a responsible entity within the Lagos dredging community, committed to upholding environmental and operational standards.

Urging Judicial Oversight Amidst Public Defamation Concerns

Ntan urged the committee to take note of the actions by some fish farmers that could potentially incite public hostility and violence. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful and constructive dialogue between the parties to avoid escalation and ensure that the interests of all stakeholders are preserved.

The Dredgers Association of Nigeria remains hopeful that the ongoing investigation by MIREMCO will clarify the actual causes behind the fish deaths. A resolution that considers the interests of all parties involved is anticipated, aiming to resolve the conflict and enhance industry relations.
