Dredging Works Begin to Restore Shorelines at Key East Gippsland Islands

Introduction

Gippsland Ports has commenced a major shoreline renourishment and dredging project at Pelican Island and Rigby Island in East Gippsland. Designed to combat erosion and enhance local ecosystems, this initiative is funded by the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority with support from the National Heritage Trust. The project is scheduled to run through April, May, and June 2025.

Environmental Significance of the Project

Pelican Island and Rigby Island are ecologically important areas that support numerous migratory and native shorebirds. Over time, these islands have experienced considerable shoreline erosion due to wind, waves, and intermittent flooding. This degradation has led to a loss of critical habitat and a reduction in the islands’ natural ability to withstand environmental pressures.

Role of Gippsland Ports and Project Objectives

Gippsland Ports is leading the implementation of this dredging operation, which aims to:

  • Restore eroded shoreline and landmass;
  • Improve habitat for shorebird nesting, foraging, and breeding;
  • Increase the islands’ resilience to storm surges and sea level rise.

This project is a vital part of Gippsland Ports’ broader commitment to coastal resilience and environmental protection in the region.

Dredging Methodology and Equipment

The renourishment process involves the use of Gippsland Ports’ dredge vessel Kalimna and support equipment. Sand is being dredged from approved areas and deposited along the affected shorelines to rebuild the coastal buffer. This approach ensures that the restored land will better support native wildlife and resist future erosion.

Partnerships and Environmental Collaboration

This initiative reflects strong inter-agency collaboration:

  • Gippsland Ports is responsible for project execution and dredging works;
  • East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority is the principal funder;
  • National Heritage Trust provides additional environmental funding.

Together, these organizations are working to secure long-term environmental sustainability for East Gippsland’s coastal regions.

Expected Outcomes

The benefits of the renourishment and dredging project include:

  • Reclaimed and stabilized shorelines on Pelican and Rigby Islands;
  • Expanded habitats for key shorebird species;
  • Strengthened natural defenses against climate-related coastal impacts.

Monitoring and Long-Term Strategy

Post-project monitoring will help assess shoreline stability and habitat regeneration. The results will guide future dredging and shoreline restoration efforts across East Gippsland and other at-risk coastal zones in Victoria.
