Egypt-Europe Undersea Power Cable Project

Milestone Partnership: The Agreement between Egyptian Government and Jan De Nul Group

In a significant move toward advancing renewable energy connectivity between Egypt and Europe, the Egyptian government, represented by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), has recently sealed a milestone agreement with Jan De Nul Group. This partnership marks a crucial step forward in the initiation of a groundbreaking undersea power cable project.

Renewable Energy Integration: Egypt’s Vision for Connecting Solar and Wind Power to Europe

Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to establishing an undersea electricity cable in late September, aiming to link its abundant solar and wind energy resources to the wider European energy market. This ambitious interconnector project seeks to transmit over 2 gigawatts of renewable power from Egypt to Europe through a sprawling undersea power cable stretching approximately 1,000 kilometers. Notably, this cable’s length surpasses the current longest interconnector cable between Denmark and Britain, which spans 765 kilometers. Moreover, the project faces significant technical challenges, with water depths along the cable route reaching depths of up to 3,000 meters.

Technical Challenges: Overcoming Depths and Distances in Undersea Cable Construction

Jan De Nul Group, renowned for its expertise in marine engineering and infrastructure projects, will spearhead the financial and technical study phase of the undersea power cable project. This comprehensive study encompasses various aspects, including project financing, green power generation, installation of transmission systems such as cables, and identifying strategic partners for integration with existing European grids.

Comprehensive Study Phase: Jan De Nul Group’s Role in Financial and Technical Analysis

Philippe Hutse, Director of Jan De Nul Offshore Energy, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing Egypt’s recognition of their unparalleled expertise in deploying extensive export cables on the seabed. Hutse highlighted the company’s recent investment in the Fleeming Jenkin, a state-of-the-art cable installation vessel specifically designed for projects requiring extensive distances and significant depths. He commended Egypt’s pioneering role in energy transition for the African continent and reiterated Jan De Nul Group’s commitment to supporting its advancement.

Expertise and Innovation: Jan De Nul Group’s Cutting-Edge Solutions for Cable Installation

Scheduled to commence project execution in 2027, the Egypt-Europe undersea power cable project represents a monumental endeavor in renewable energy infrastructure development. Stay tuned for further updates on this transformative initiative shaping the future of energy connectivity between Egypt and Europe.
