Enhancing Boating in Victoria

New Funding to Boost Victoria’s Boating Accessibility

The Allan Labor Government is dedicated to enhancing the accessibility and enjoyment of boating across Victoria. Through the introduction of new grants, boat ramp managers are encouraged to upgrade facilities, making it easier for boaters to spend a day on the water.

Grants for Boat Ramp Upgrades

Minister for Outdoor Recreation, Steve Dimopoulos, announced that applications are now open for the latest round of the Labor Government’s Recreational Boating Access and Dredging Grants. These grants, part of the Better Boating Fund, provide up to $150,000 to support the upgrade of public boat ramps across Victoria. The upgrades aim to improve accessibility across various tidal conditions and facilitate future dredging projects.

Funding From Boating Fees

This initiative is funded by reinvesting fees from recreational boating licenses and vessel registrations into projects that enhance boating infrastructure. Better Boating Victoria, responsible for managing this funding, is also leading the state’s largest boat ramp construction program. This program ensures that launching and parking remain free at all public ramps throughout Victoria.

Successful Grant Projects

Last year, several councils benefited from these grants. Frankston City Council used the funds for dredging at the entrance of Kananook Creek, while Moyne Shire Council removed sediment from the Moyne River at Port Fairy. Additionally, improvements at Tooradin boat ramp have facilitated better access during various tides.

Eligibility and Application Process

Local and state government departments and agencies, committees of management, and local waterway authorities are eligible to apply for these grants. Organizations may submit multiple applications to address different needs.

Minister Dimopoulos encourages boat ramp managers to apply for these grants to enhance their facilities. “This funding initiative is a prime example of how we’re using boaters’ license and registration fees to reinvest in the community, making boating more enjoyable and accessible in Victoria,” he stated. This commitment ensures that boaters can look forward to improved facilities and a better overall experience on Victoria’s waters.
