Dredging Operations at the Port of Batulicin

In a significant milestone, Indonesia has welcomed the first Damen CSD600 Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) into operation. This distinctive dredger is the first of Damen’s new comprehensive dredger range to be delivered. Transported from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the dredger arrived in Indonesia as deck cargo on a heavy lift carrier. The dredger, named Jhoni 58, is now engaged in a crucial maintenance dredging project.

Dredging Operations at the Port of Batulicin

The dredging operation is located at the Port of Batulicin on the island of Kalimantan, a vital hub for coal transportation. The port’s access channel, frequently used by numerous coal barges, experiences continuous sedimentation, necessitating regular maintenance to preserve navigational depth.

Importance of the Port of Batulicin

The Port of Batulicin plays a crucial role in Indonesia’s coal industry. The busy access channel is essential for coal barge transports, making the maintenance dredging project vital for uninterrupted operations.

High-Efficiency Dredge Pump Technology

The newly designed high-efficiency dredge pump of the CSD600 effectively removes sediment and transports it to a spoil field located 500 meters away. This technology ensures the navigational depth is maintained, facilitating smooth coal transportation.

Commissioning by Damen Field Service Engineers

The powerful Cutter Suction Dredger was commissioned on-site by Damen Field Service Engineers. During the commissioning, the crew familiarized themselves with the dredger’s advanced features, including the 250-kilowatt cutter unit, a large swing width, and a maximum dredging depth of -16 meters.

State-of-the-Art Control System

A significant focus was the state-of-the-art control system. The control cabin, devoid of a traditional desk, required the crew to adapt to controls integrated into the dredge master’s chair. Two screens are connected to the chair’s easily recognizable buttons and levers.

User-Friendly Interface for Efficient Operations

A touch screen within reach on the right-hand armrest and a larger screen at the dredge master’s feet provide clear visuals on the dredge pump’s production and the status of the drive. This setup makes troubleshooting straightforward with the schematic screen layout of various onboard systems.

Future Expansion Capabilities

Ms. Inge Hoogenboezem, Damen Sales Manager, highlighted that the system could be easily expanded by adding modules like cutter automation and dredge pump automation in the future. “Currently, the dredge master can set the swing width by entering a few digits, allowing the dredger to move sideways automatically. This feature is highly praised for its efficiency in handling large dredge jobs,” she stated.

PT. Dua Samudera Perkasa: Leading the Way in Technological Advancements

PT. Dua Samudera Perkasa, the operator of the dredger, is a prominent player in Kalimantan’s port industry. Mr. Haji Samsudin Andi Arsyad, owner of PT. DSP, expressed his pride in deploying the first Damen CSD600 in Batulicin. “It fits our operations perfectly. Our company aims to lead in technological advancements. Our dredger, Jhoni 58, exemplifies this commitment, performing exceptionally well with the support of the Damen Field Service team, ensuring a smooth start to our operations,” he said.

Conclusion

The introduction of the Damen CSD600 Cutter Suction Dredger in Indonesia marks a significant step forward in the country’s dredging capabilities. With its advanced technology and efficient design, the Jhoni 58 is set to enhance the maintenance of the Port of Batulicin, ensuring seamless coal transportation and positioning PT. Dua Samudera Perkasa at the forefront of port industry innovations.
