Historic $41 Million Canaveral Harbor Dredging and Beachfill Project Begins

The Canaveral Port Authority, in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Brevard County, has embarked on a groundbreaking $41 million shoreline preservation project. This initiative represents the sixth phase of a long-standing federal effort to combat erosion and protect the Canaveral Harbor area.

Historic $41 Million Investment in Shoreline Preservation

The Canaveral Harbor Dredging and Beachfill Project is part of an ongoing program designed to address downdrift erosion caused by the Canaveral Harbor Federal Navigation Project. This historic $41 million investment demonstrates a commitment to both environmental stewardship and maritime safety.

“This vital effort by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has restored miles of beaches over the years while maintaining safe navigation for our harbor,” said Capt. John Murray, CEO of Port Canaveral.

Key Details of the Sand Bypass Beach Renourishment Project

The USACE Sand Bypass Beach Renourishment Project is divided into two main segments:

Segment 1: This area extends from Harbor Drive in Cape Canaveral to Palm Lane in Cocoa Beach. Sand placement for this segment is scheduled to begin between January 20 and 28.

Segment 2: Starting in mid-March, this phase will cover an area near North 2nd Street in Cocoa Beach, progressing south to Tables Beach near Patrick Space Force Base.

Mobilization of Equipment and Resources

Beach equipment is being staged at Washington Avenue in Cape Canaveral to prepare for sand placement activities. Approximately 1.5 million cubic yards of sand will be dredged and bypassed from the shoreline north of Port Canaveral along the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Awarded $40.6 Million Contract

Houston-based Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, LLC has been awarded the $40.6 million contract to execute the dredging and beach restoration work. The project highlights the importance of collaboration between federal, local, and private entities to protect Florida’s beaches and ensure sustainable coastal management.

Protecting Florida’s Beaches and Navigation

This critical project not only safeguards Florida’s coastlines from erosion but also ensures the continued safe operation of Canaveral Harbor. It is a testament to the commitment of the Canaveral Port Authority, the USACE, and Brevard County to preserving natural resources and supporting maritime industries.

By addressing the long-term effects of erosion and reinforcing the shoreline, the Canaveral Harbor Dredging and Beachfill Project serves as a vital investment in both environmental protection and regional economic stability.
