The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has shared significant progress on the emergency dredging and beach restoration project at the Indian River Inlet. Since December 2, the beach and dune restoration work has advanced at a consistent pace. DNREC’s contractor, Dredgit Corporation, has maintained an efficient workflow, achieving remarkable daily dredging volumes. This efficiency is a key factor in ensuring the project stays on schedule.
Sand Placement Targets Ahead of Schedule
As of December 22, a total of 130,737 cubic yards (CY) of sand has been dredged and placed, edging closer to the project’s overall target of 380,000 CY by late February 2025. In a single 24-hour period, nearly 10,000 CY of sand were pumped onto the northern beach and dune.
Dredgit has committed to operating 24/7, including during the holiday season, to ensure timely completion. This continuous effort underscores the urgency and importance of restoring the inlet’s critical infrastructure.
Project Goals and Timeline
The current phase of the Indian River Inlet dredging project, led by DNREC, is slated for completion by February 2025. Following this, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will oversee a second phase to further reinforce the area.
