Modi-Kicks-Off-Bunbury-Harbor-Dredging-Campaign

On behalf of Southern Ports, the Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger ‘Modi R’ has been contracted once again to perform essential maintenance dredging at the Port of Bunbury, Western Australia. This marks the second dredging campaign in 2024, beginning today, August 15, with a planned completion date before the end of November 2024.

Importance of Maintenance Dredging at Bunbury Harbor

Why Dredging is Crucial for Port Operations

Maintaining the depth and safety of channels and berths is vital for the smooth operation of the Port of Bunbury. Dredging helps prevent sediment buildup, ensuring that vessels can navigate safely and efficiently. This campaign is part of a broader effort to enhance the port’s operational capacity and ensure it remains a key maritime hub in Western Australia.

Details of the 2024 Dredging Campaign

Vessels and Equipment Involved

The Modi R will be supported by a barge-based excavator, Tug Edi, and the split hopper barge PM Skippy. This combination of vessels and equipment is designed to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the dredging process.

Approved Disposal of Dredged Material

All dredged material from this campaign will be transported to an approved dredge spoil disposal ground, located approximately 10 kilometers northwest of the Port of Bunbury. This ensures that the environmental impact is minimized while maintaining the port’s navigational depths.

Expected Outcomes of the Dredging Campaign

Enhancing Safety and Efficiency

The primary goal of this dredging campaign is to maximize the depth, safety, and efficiency of the channels and berths within the Port of Bunbury. By doing so, Southern Ports aims to support the port’s long-term operational needs and contribute to the economic growth of the region.

Conclusion

The 2024 Bunbury Harbor dredging campaign, led by the Modi R and its supporting vessels, underscores the ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving one of Western Australia’s key ports. As this essential maintenance work progresses, it will ensure that the Port of Bunbury continues to operate safely and efficiently, supporting maritime activities in the region.
