Port of Kangerlussuaq Wraps Up 2024 Dredging Program, Enhancing Docking Capabilities

Sikuki Nuuk Harbor has successfully wrapped up this year’s dredging operations at the Port of Kangerlussuaq. The 2024 dredging campaign, carried out by Polar Dive on behalf of the Government of Greenland, marks a significant step towards improving the port’s docking facilities. The upgrades are expected to benefit all harbor users starting from the 2025 docking season.

Expanded Shipping Channel: A Key Upgrade for Kangerlussuaq

The dredging efforts this year primarily targeted the shipping channel, which has now been widened to 24 meters and deepened to depths ranging from 3.5 to 5 meters below mean sea level (MV). These changes are designed to accommodate a greater variety of vessels, providing more flexible docking options.

Restoring Full Navigability to the Shipping Channel

The upgrades have restored the full navigability of the shipping channel, which had previously faced limitations. With the recent dredging, smaller vessels can now dock directly at the quay, making the port more accessible and user-friendly.

Comprehensive Dredging of the Harbor Basin and Western Area

In addition to the shipping channel, the 2024 campaign included comprehensive dredging of the entire harbor basin and an expanded area to the west of the harbor, both of which were cleared to a depth of 5 meters. These enhancements ensure that the port remains fully functional and ready to meet increased demand.

Benefits for All Harbor Users

The deeper and wider shipping channel will significantly boost docking opportunities, allowing a diverse range of vessels to utilize the port. This development positions the Port of Kangerlussuaq as a more attractive docking location for maritime operations in Greenland.

Looking Ahead: Final Phase of Dredging in 2025

The dredging project is set to continue with a final phase scheduled for 2025, where further enhancements will be made to the port’s infrastructure.

Plans to Widen and Deepen the Shipping Channel Further

The upcoming work will see the shipping channel expanded to a total width of 38 meters with a minimum depth of 4.5 meters. These upgrades aim to increase the port’s capacity and efficiency further.

Operations to Resume After Winter

Dredging operations are expected to resume as soon as possible following the winter season, ensuring that the improvements are in place for the busy 2025 docking season.

Port of Kangerlussuaq: A Gateway to Enhanced Maritime Operations

With the 2024 dredging campaign completed, the Port of Kangerlussuaq is set to offer better docking capabilities and improved maritime services. The ongoing upgrades will help meet the growing needs of the region, making it a crucial hub for shipping and logistics in Greenland.
