LAOAG CITY – To prepare for the impending heavy rains that could potentially cause flash floods, the provincial government of Ilocos Norte is utilizing its backhoe, excavator, and other machinery to expedite the desilting of rivers and creeks in vulnerable towns and villages.
Desilting Efforts in Key Areas
Marcel Tabije, the local disaster risk reduction and management officer of Ilocos Norte, announced on Thursday afternoon that desilting efforts are actively underway in flood-prone areas, including the towns of Paoay, Pinili, Badoc, and Pagudpud.
“We are clearing these waterways to restore their depth, preventing overflows that could flood nearby communities,” Tabije explained.
Cash-for-Work Programs and Clean-Up Initiatives
In addition to providing equipment, the provincial government has implemented cash-for-work and emergency employment programs, emphasizing extensive clean-up initiatives aimed at the simultaneous declogging of waterways across the province.
Monitoring Critical Infrastructure During Rainy Season
As the rainy season begins, critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, flood control structures, and irrigation systems are under continuous monitoring to ensure their stability.
“We urge all our kakailian (constituents) to stay prepared as the rainy season is upon us,” Tabije emphasized.
Geohazard Study Highlights Dredging Necessity
A recent geohazard study by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) underscored the necessity of dredging rivers and creeks to facilitate water flow into the sea, thereby reducing riverbank erosion and flooding risks.
The MGB also advised local governments to avoid establishing settlements at the foot of mountains, adjacent to river channels, and near canyons and gullies in upland areas to mitigate potential hazards. (PNA)
