The upgrade of Kennacraig’s berth facilities, managed by CMAL (Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited), is underway. Significant progress has been made in the construction phase, with works proceeding smoothly and on schedule.
Enhancing Berth Facilities
The first phase of construction focuses on enhancing the main berth facilities to accommodate the arrival of MV Isle of Islay and MV Loch Indaal. This includes dredging operations and installing new combi-piled walls to widen and deepen the berth pockets and approach at Kennacraig South Berth. Completion of this phase is anticipated later this year.
Tony Fry’s Remarks
Tony Fry, Construction Director at George Leslie, expressed satisfaction with the progress. Despite challenging conditions, the quay wall piling process is underway, with drilling operations progressing as planned. Attention is also given to upgrading or replacing quay fenders and mooring systems on the south Berth, along with necessary electrical enhancements to support future shore power charging capabilities.
Commencement of Works at Other Sites
Works on the other two sites within the project have commenced as programmed. Final preparations for drilling are underway at Port Askaig on Islay while dredging equipment has been mobilized to the site at Colonsay.
