The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, has announced a postponement of the scheduled maintenance dredging of the federal navigation channel near Sawpit Creek, Nassau County, to early October 2024. This decision has been made to protect active shorebird nests located in the beach placement area of Amelia Island State Park.
Project Details and Contractor Information
Initially awarded on May 16 to Southwind Construction of Evansville, Indiana, the dredging project carries a budget of $6.9 million. It involves the removal of approximately 550,000 cubic yards of shoaling from Cuts DU-23 through DU-27C. The objective is to reach a depth of 12 feet, with an additional 2 feet allowed for over-depth to ensure navigational safety.
Dredging Material Management and Safety Measures
Beach-compatible dredged material will be used to enhance Amelia Island State Park Beach, whereas non-beach compatible material will be transported to the upland Dredge Management Disposal Area DU-2. To ensure maritime safety, the dredging pipeline will be securely anchored and submerged, with its route clearly marked by orange poly balls and lighted danger diamond buoys. Dredging operations are planned to proceed continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until the project is completed.
Notifications and Precautions for Mariners and Beachgoers
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will issue a Local Notice to Mariners 30 days before the commencement of dredging activities. Boaters are requested to avoid anchoring and swimming in clearly delineated sections along the shoreline to prevent disturbances to the project. Additionally, beachgoers should avoid wading near the beach shoreline adjacent to discharge areas to ensure their safety and the integrity of the project.
Environmental Conservation Efforts
During the dredging process, the USACE team, in partnership with the Florida State Park Service, will conduct protective monitoring of turtle nests. Measures will be taken to potentially relocate turtle nests, and the public is encouraged to respect any markers and barriers erected along the beach to protect these nests. This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment to environmental conservation while maintaining necessary infrastructural projects.
