The City of Long Beach, California, has proposed a maintenance dredging project for the Alamitos Bay Entrance Channel, with public comments invited until January 10, 2025.
Purpose of the Alamitos Bay Dredging Project
The dredging initiative is designed to improve navigational conditions in the channel. By restoring safe depths, the project aims to enhance boater access and ensure the channel remains viable for recreational activities.
Project Details and Design Specifications
- Target Depths: The project plans to dredge the channel to a design depth of -20 feet mean lower low water (MLLW), with an additional 2 feet of overdredge allowance.
- Sediment Volume: Approximately 415,000 cubic yards of material will be removed, including 300,000 cubic yards above the design depth and 115,000 cubic yards within the overdredge allowance.
Sediment Repurposing for Beach Nourishment
The sediment dredged from Alamitos Bay has been assessed by the Dredged Material Management Team (DMMT) and deemed suitable for beneficial use. The material will be transported to Peninsula Beach, located west of the Entrance Channel’s jetty, to replenish sand and support coastal erosion mitigation.
Equipment and Dredging Method
The project will employ hydraulic cutter-suction dredging equipment, ensuring efficient removal of sandy sediment. The material will be pumped directly to Peninsula Beach for immediate use in beach nourishment.
