Royal HaskoningDHV Leads Torres Strait Jetty Modernization

Royal HaskoningDHV has been awarded a transformative marine infrastructure project to restore and upgrade key jetties across the Torres Strait Islands, enhancing safety, durability, and accessibility.

Revitalizing Key Infrastructure Across Saibai, Dauan, and Boigu Islands

Under the commission from the Torres Strait Island Regional Council, Royal HaskoningDHV will design and rebuild jetties on Saibai, Dauan, and Boigu Islands. These upgraded structures will incorporate innovative features such as:

  • Enhanced stability for improved safety.
  • Wider access ways to accommodate larger barges.
  • Durable materials, including low-slip plastic slats, for extended lifespan.
  • Stair installations to improve accessibility.

Addressing Safety and Usability Concerns

“An initial condition assessment revealed that many jetties were either severely degraded or required substantial restoration. Our designs will deliver significant improvements to meet modern standards,” said Stuart Bettington, Technical Director and Project Lead at Royal HaskoningDHV.

Largest Marine Infrastructure Investment in 30 Years

This project is part of a historic $80 million investment by the Australian and Queensland governments to enhance marine infrastructure in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula area. It represents the region’s most significant infrastructure upgrade in over three decades.

Aging Jetties Beyond Their Lifespan

The existing jetties, initially built with a 25-year operational lifespan, have been in use for over 30 years. Prolonged exposure to vessel collisions, severe weather, and material degradation has left many unsafe and in dire need of modernization.

Project Timeline and Next Steps

The condition assessment for the jetties has been completed, and the project is currently in the costing and design phase. Construction is scheduled to commence during the dry season in May 2025, ensuring minimal disruption to regional activities.

What This Upgrade Means for the Torres Strait

This ambitious project will not only improve safety and usability for local communities but also support larger vessels and foster economic growth in the region. The enhanced infrastructure will strengthen connectivity and resilience for the island communities.
