Portos RS has launched an urgent dredging project to restore the most critical section of the access channel leading to the Port of Rio Grande, specifically in the area outside the Barra Breakwaters.
Critical Dredging to Restore Access Channel
The Port Authority has assigned Jan de Nul’s hopper dredger, Galileo Galilei, to carry out this crucial task. This dredging operation is essential for maintaining the operational efficiency and safety of the Port of Rio Grande, a vital hub for maritime traffic and cargo handling.
Significant Investment and Timeline
“An investment of R$ 21.5 million has been allocated for the removal of 593,000 cubic meters of sediment, with the project expected to be completed within 20 days,” stated Lucas Meurer, the Director of Infrastructure. This investment underscores the importance of ensuring the port remains fully operational and capable of handling large vessels.
Bathymetric Survey and Flooding Impact
This dredging requirement was determined by a bathymetric survey conducted following a vessel incident in May. The same period also saw significant flooding, contributing to the silting of the waterway and access channel to the Port of Rio Grande. However, the current operation will focus on a stretch of approximately three kilometers, addressing the most immediate concerns.
Future Plans for Comprehensive Dredging
The Port Authority has plans for a more comprehensive dredging campaign to fully restore the depths of the waterway once all necessary permits are secured. This long-term plan aims to enhance the port’s capacity and ensure uninterrupted access for maritime traffic.
