Van Oord Completes Major Dredging Project at Ain Sokhna Port

Van Oord has successfully completed the dredging of two new port basins at Ain Sokhna Port, a key initiative in the broader expansion program designed to enhance the Suez Canal Economic Zone’s role as a global maritime hub.

Key Highlights of the Ain Sokhna Port Project

Large-Scale Dredging Operations

Commissioned by the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone and Egypt’s Ministry of Transport, the project involved the removal of approximately 21 million cubic meters of soil. To tackle the region’s challenging hard soil, Van Oord deployed its state-of-the-art self-propelled cutter suction dredger Artemis and trailing suction hopper dredger Vox Amalia, supported by a diverse fleet to maintain high efficiency. The dredged material was transported and deposited in a designated area approximately 9.5 kilometers offshore. The project was completed within a swift 14-month timeline.

Strategic Location and Expansion Plans

Ain Sokhna Port, strategically situated on the western Gulf of Suez coast—approximately 120 kilometers east of Cairo and 40 kilometers south of Suez—is rapidly evolving into a major industrial and commercial hub. The port’s expansion is a cornerstone of Egypt’s vision to establish a global shipping nexus, with plans for:

  • New container, dry bulk, general cargo, and liquid bulk terminals.
  • Logistics and warehousing facilities.
  • Distribution centers and a dry port.
  • Africa’s first green hydrogen port.

Infrastructure Enhancements

A high-speed electric railway will connect Ain Sokhna to Alexandria, New Alamein, and New Cairo, streamlining supply routes and catalyzing urban development. This connectivity underscores the port’s strategic importance in facilitating trade and bolstering economic growth.

Van Oord’s Commitment to Egypt’s Growth

“Following our pivotal role in the construction of the second Suez Canal in 2015, Van Oord is honored to contribute once again to Egypt’s economic growth. This project marks a significant milestone in transforming Ain Sokhna Port into the largest maritime hub on the Red Sea,” the company stated.

Boosting Global Trade and Logistics

This accomplishment underscores the strategic importance of Ain Sokhna Port in facilitating trade between Asia, Europe, and North Africa. The successful completion of this project further strengthens Egypt’s position in global maritime logistics and highlights the region’s potential as a key player in international shipping.
