Victorian-Waterways-to-Benefit-from-Dredging-Grants

Boaters across Victoria are set to enjoy improved access to waterways with new funding announced by the State Government today. The funding will enhance boating ramps and dredging projects, making it easier for recreational users to get out on the water.

$700,000 in Grants to Improve Waterway Access

Minister for Outdoor Recreation, Steve Dimopoulos, announced that $700,000 in Recreational Boating Access and Dredging grants will be distributed through the Government’s Better Boating Fund. These grants aim to improve access to Victorian waterways by supporting essential dredging projects across the state.

“These annual dredging grants are a fantastic example of how we are reinvesting recreational boaters’ licence and registration fees into projects that enhance the experience for all boaters,” Mr. Dimopoulos explained. “Making waterways more accessible means more opportunities for fishing, cruising, and family fun on the water.”

Victorian Fisheries Authority to Oversee Boating Projects

The grants will be delivered through the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s (VFA) Better Boating division, which is currently spearheading Victoria’s largest-ever boat ramp construction program. This ensures that critical dredging and construction efforts are aligned with the state’s broader boating infrastructure goals.

Key Boating Projects Funded by the $700,000 Grant

The $700,000 in funding will be distributed across seven projects, allowing ramp and waterway managers to either conduct dredging work immediately or plan for future maintenance projects. The goal is to make boating ramps easier to access, especially in high-traffic areas.

Mallacoota – Bastion Point Boat Ramp Dredging

The East Gippsland Shire Council has been awarded $150,000 to carry out dredging at the Bastion Point boat ramp in Mallacoota. This project will address sediment buildup that has made ramp access challenging. Previously, the Council received a Recreational Boating Grant to maintain the rock groyne, which provides essential protection from wind and waves.

At Clifton Springs on the Bellarine Peninsula, the City of Greater Geelong Council will receive $135,000 to dredge the entrance to the popular boat harbour and ramp facility. This grant builds on previous funding that supported the development of a dredging plan and provided more parking spaces for boats and trailers, making the facility more convenient for boaters.

Kananook Creek – Ongoing Dredging Maintenance

The Frankston City Council will receive $125,000 to continue regular dredging near the Kananook Creek boat ramp. This essential work occurs multiple times each year to ensure uninterrupted access to Port Phillip. Regular dredging is part of an ongoing maintenance program designed to retain easy boating access.

Additional Boating Projects Receiving Dredging Funds

Several other locations will also benefit from the Better Boating Fund:

  • Anthony’s Nose Boat Ramp in Dromana: The Dromana Foreshore Committee of Management will conduct its first dredging operation using a long-reach excavator, funded by a $42,000 grant.
  • Tootgarook Boat Ramp: $60,000 in funding will support annual channel dredging.
  • Mornington Peninsula Shire Council: The council will receive $128,000 to address local dredging needs.
  • Kirk Point Boat Ramp: $60,000 will be allocated to plan dredging that will reinstate navigable depth at this ramp.

Benefits of the Dredging and Boating Access Grants

These grants are part of a long-term strategy to ensure that Victoria’s waterways remain accessible and safe for recreational boating. Improved boat ramp access helps:

  • Reduce congestion at popular boating locations.
  • Ensure safer launching and retrieving of boats.
  • Enhance the overall boating experience for recreational users.

Enhancing Waterway Access for a Better Boating Experience

The Better Boating Fund continues to demonstrate the State Government’s commitment to reinvesting in boating infrastructure. These dredging and construction projects aim to improve the boating experience across Victoria, ensuring that waterways are accessible, safe, and enjoyable for all.

By improving access to key waterways and supporting dredging efforts, these grants will help to boost recreational boating throughout the state, allowing Victorian boaters to take full advantage of the beautiful coastal and inland waters.
