Chichester District Council Strengthens Coastal Defense Maintenance
Chichester District councillors have approved the appointment of a specialized contractor to handle the regular maintenance of the District’s coastal defense assets. This decision was reached during a session of the Council’s Cabinet on February 6, 2024.
Over the next five years, the contractor will undertake maintenance work on behalf of the council, following the expiration of the previous contract.
Councillor Jonathan Brown, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environmental Strategy at Chichester District Council, emphasized the importance of having an engineering firm on contract. He noted that this arrangement enables prompt action in case of emergency repairs and ensures the enhancement of groynes to facilitate shingle replenishment, contributing to overall beach management efforts.
While coastal erosion prevention is not a statutory obligation, it remains a priority for the council, given the protection it offers to numerous homes and businesses along the nine-mile coastline, particularly in Selsey, Bracklesham, and East Wittering.
Moreover, the contract offers stability for the contractor, fostering the development of a skilled team with specific expertise tailored to the challenges of the District’s coastal frontages. This, in turn, enhances the value of the maintenance work carried out.
Included in the contract is an emergency call-out maintenance service, mandating the contractor to be on-site within two hours, 365 days a year, ensuring swift response to any urgent issues.
