In a ministerial-level meeting chaired by the Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian, the Adani Vizhinjam Port authorities have been directed to resume dredging at the Muthalapozhi estuary to ensure safer navigation for boats. The minister confirmed that the government has prioritized the channel-clearing process and plans to deploy dredgers within the next two to three days.
Utilization of Long-Boom Cranes for Sand Removal
Long-boom cranes will be utilized to effectively remove sand sediments and boulders from the estuary, with support from the Harbor Engineering Department. The government has allocated INR 1 crore for this crucial sand removal process. In response to frequent boat accidents in the area, the government will deploy 30 diving experts from the fishermen’s community in three shifts.
Assurance from Adani Group Regarding Safety Measures
Moreover, the government will provide three boats for rescue operations and an ambulance to attend emergencies, ensuring better safety measures. Six high mast lights will also be installed in the area, and road maintenance to the estuary will be carried out. The minister received assurance from the Adani group regarding these safety measures.
During discussions with the fishermen’s union about the harbor’s future, the Fisheries Director proposed closing the harbor for fishing during adverse weather conditions. However, the fishermen opposed this idea, and the minister supported their demand, pledging to safeguard their interests at all costs. To address sand sedimentation issues between the harbor and the sea, the government will implement the sand-bypassing method at an estimated cost of INR 10 crore.
To understand the problems at Muthalapozhi, the government has entrusted the Pune-based Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) with conducting a thorough study. Depending on the report’s findings, immediate action will be taken if any design issues with the channel are identified. The report is expected to be available by December.
