Van Oord Completes Dredging at Prinses Amaliahaven, Rotterdam

Van Oord has successfully finished the dredging work at Prinses Amaliahaven on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. The project has deepened the harbor basin to 20 meters below sea level, paving the way for enhanced maritime operations in one of Europe’s busiest ports.

Dredging at Prinses Amaliahaven: A Major Milestone

The dredging activities, which are part of the larger development of the Prinses Amaliahaven, saw Van Oord deploy three of its state-of-the-art vessels. These included the cutter suction dredger Biesbosch and two LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredgers, Vox Apolonia and Vox Alexia.

The simultaneous operation of these vessels highlighted Van Oord’s efficiency and expertise in large-scale dredging projects.

Sustainable Use of Dredged Materials

A key aspect of the project was the sustainable reuse of dredged sand. Part of the material was repurposed for a 45-hectare land reclamation initiative in the adjacent Prinses Alexiahaven. This effort demonstrates Van Oord’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices while contributing to regional development.

Infrastructure Enhancements at Prinses Amaliahaven

Van Oord, in partnership with HOCHTIEF and Ballast Nedam, is not only deepening the harbor basin but also constructing essential infrastructure. This includes:

  • Two deep-sea quays
  • An inland shipping quay
  • Earth-retaining walls

These improvements aim to support larger vessels and enhance the port’s logistics capabilities, ensuring it remains a competitive hub for global trade.

Boosting Port of Rotterdam’s Capacity

The development of Prinses Amaliahaven is poised to significantly increase the Port of Rotterdam’s throughput capacity. According to Van Oord, the enhancements could add up to four million standard containers (TEU) annually. This expansion reinforces the port’s position as a key player in international shipping and logistics.

Conclusion: A Step Forward for Rotterdam’s Maritime Future

Van Oord’s completion of the dredging operations at Prinses Amaliahaven marks a significant step in the ongoing development of the Port of Rotterdam. With increased capacity and sustainable practices, the project underscores the port’s readiness to meet future demands in global trade.

By combining innovation, sustainability, and collaboration, Van Oord continues to set benchmarks in the maritime industry.
